Last spring, NBC boasted it would outdo Fox's coverage of the 1996 World Series. But with the Florida Marlins and Cleveland Indians striking out with viewers (game 1 and game 2 are down 2 million from last fall's Yankees-Braves matchup) the net is singing a different tune. In fact, NBC West Coast prez Don Ohlmeyer went so far as to say he hoped it would be over in four games. No luck: The Fall Classic will run at least five. The Peacock did get some good news: The premiere of its Ice-T drama, Players (59th), attracted 15 percent more 18-to-49-year-olds than last season's Unsolved Mysteries. And over at CBS, Public Eye With Bryant Gumbel (39th) got a much-needed boost from an interview with John Denver's ex-wife Annie.
