Album Review: 'Gummo' (1997)

Bethlehem, Dark Noerd, Mortician, Bathory, Brujeria — the band names alone tell the story. Gummo offers an assortment of tracks from so-called black-metal (a.k.a. death metal, a.k.a. noise from hell) practitioners, so you'll find lots of menacing, stentorian vocals and spasming guitars here. It's pretty pointless unless you're an unusually morbid high schooler, but this does serve as a useful sampler of this god-awful stuff. C+
