Since 1986, Thomas has been the auteur in residence at Vivid Video, where he shoots one $150,000 film in eight days once a month. ''He makes real movies,'' says Paul Fishbein, publisher of Adult Video News. ''If you took the sex out of them, you'd still have interesting films.''

''I love what I do,'' Thomas says. ''But if I had it to do over again, I would have stuck it out in Hollywood.'' Those regrets are surfacing ever since he saw Boogie Nights (for which another porn legend, Ron Jeremy, was a consultant). ''Walking out of the movie I felt, Am I that laughable?'' Thomas says. ''Then I thought, So what? Even if I'm fooling myself as much as [Jack Horner] did, who gives a f---? It's not the worst crime in the world.''
