Album Review: 'Songs and Sounds'

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: Pat Dinizio

PAT DINIZIO Songs and Sounds (Velvel) Without fully abandoning his old band's commitment to hard pop, the Smithereens frontman stretches out for an album of smart, adult tunes free of stylistic straitjackets (though occasionally embellished with saxophone). Elvis Costello fans take note: DiNizio's new sensibility (like his voice) bears a remarkable resemblance to that of the bespectacled British pop star. B+
