Having discovered Russell Crowe in L.A. Confidential, you might be tempted to check him out in the earlier effort Rough Magic. Don't. What you'll find is a failed attempt at mixing film noir, magic-realist fantasy, and a soggy romance between Bridget Fonda's on-the-run magician and Crowe's hard-boiled reporter. Most painful is the misbegotten magic that has a dog talk, a man turn into a sausage, and poor Fonda laying an egg and losing her heart. D
