Since Will Oldham records with little overdubbing, his albums (previously released under variations on the name Palace Brothers) catch his voice cracking in unusual places and his bands improvising without a net. On Joya, the master of paradox coaxes his group into a spirited groove before settling it down with his slow vocals. The songs work like dreams: hypnotic and sublimely bizarre. B+
