WAITING TO EXHALE (R) Terry McMillan's best-selling novel has been turned into an exhilarating blast of a movie. The strong cast is headed by Angela Bassett as Bernadine, a devoted wife and mother recently dumped by her husband. Whitney Houston is tough-as-nails Savannah, portrayed with a detachment so cool it's occasionally jarring. McMillan's theme is the notion of being treated well -- women's yearning to be loved, respected, even adored once in a while -- and it has been taken to heart by director Forest Whitaker. B+
