Patrick McGilligan does excellent reporting on Jack Nicholson's childhood and troubled family background, but Jack's Life strongest suit is its attention to Nicholson the professional, from his passionate work ethic in acting classes during the 1950s to his stint as a screenwriter of the Monkees movie Head to his pivotal performance in Easy Rider. B
