Salt peter (1996)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Ruby; Genre: Rock

Ruby's bid to integrate potentially conflicting elements — the wailing, guitar-driven noise crunch of PJ Harvey and laid-back trip-hop beats reminiscent of Tricky, to name just a couple — almost results in a satisfying debut in Salt peter. But the abstract, directionless angst of the lyrics often ends up tipping the scale toward the forced and adolescent. B
