Warner offered Ekaterina Gordeeva, widow of ice-skater Sergei Grinkov, a deal in the $250,000 range to produce a tribute to her husband. The book, filled with personal photos and mementos, will be out next fall.

It's not always the big names who get the big book deals. Abraham Verghese, whose last book, My Own Country, got stellar reviews, has signed a $500,000, two-book contract with HarperCollins. The first book, The Tennis Partner, is a nonfiction account of his best friend's suicide.
