The Songs of West Side Story (1996)

EW's GRADE

Details Lead Performance: Various Artists

Too many of these all-star remakes on The Songs of West Side Story are either empty sock-hop nostalgia or tastefully atmospheric Disney soundtrack schlock. Aretha Franklin's ''Somewhere'' is a tuneless bore. But ''Gee, Officer Krupke'' goes wackily overboard with its bottomless barrage of ''distoibed'' urban voices (Salt 'N' Pepa, the Jerky Boys, Paul Rodriguez, TLC's Left Eye, Coolio clone Def Jef). And Selena's ''A Boy Like That'' is sarcastic, sexy, percussive, and filled with foreboding about the dangerous boys from the wrong side of the tracks.
