WHO KNEW THAT IF you put a cute little movie that earned $36 million in theaters on video shelves, launched a massive marketing campaign, and wished for magic, your dreams would come true? The family fantasy The Indian in the Cupboard, written by E.T.'s Melissa Mathison, shot straight to No. 1 on both the rentals and sales charts its first week on tape, thanks to an ad blitz on 17 cable and network TV channels and free bonuses for tape buyers: a key, a toy Indian, and packaging that transforms into -- what else? -- a cupboard. Weighing in at No. 4, the rentals chart's other new arrival, Nine Months, appears to have been blessed with some of the divine inspiration that drove its box office take to $70 million.
