WIGSTOCK: THE MOVIE The ''Lady'' Bunny, RuPaul (1995, Evergreen, R, priced for rental) Held in Manhattan's West Village on Labor Day weekend, Wigstock is a daylong festival that essentially celebrates drag queens. It's such a lively, colorful subject for a documentary that you'd think it would be a surefire winner. But Wigstock doesn't go there -- the skimpy treatment of the event is so underwhelming on the video screen, it must've seemed that much more inconsequential in an actual movie theater. While it's certainly not a chore to watch, this movie manages to capture only about a tenth of the event's energy and diversity, and gives very short shrift to its origins and its context -- a community saying yes to life in the face of bigotry, AIDS, and more.
