In small doses, 16 Horsepower's twisted, minor-key electric banjo and slide-guitar-driven cowboy blues have a violent, quirky power Sackcloth 'n' Ashes is Marty Robbins or Son Volt as imagined by Quentin Tarantino. But a little sagebrush goes a long way, and David Eugene Edwards' affected vocals and cynical, hollow songs become tiresome over a whole album.
