Post-jazz guitar icon John McLaughlin hasn't come up with an album as diverse and star-studded as The Promise for almost 20 years. Included on the guest list are Jeff Beck, David Sanborn, Sting, and regular trio member Joey DeFrancesco on organ and trumpet. A lovably eclectic mess that somehow manages to make perfect sense, The Promise delivers. A-
