He'll Never Spend Cash in This Town Again

Director Nick Broomfield found interviewing for his documentary Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam ''a bit like casting a film.'' Not only did most participants demand to be paid, but ''if they discovered that someone else got paid more, they'd get terribly upset,'' he says. Former LAPD chief Daryl Gates, who is caught on camera collecting Broomfield's crisp $100 bills, is upset for a different reason. Gates, who hasn't seen the movie, says he's ''angry that Broomfield made me look seedy'' and contends he agreed to a mere $1,000 fee, not $1,500 as the director claims. ''I'm a member of the Screen Actors Guild and I've always been paid [for film work],'' continues Gates, who has played himself in three documentaries and The Simpsons.
