IT MAY not be what you'd expect from the director who caused an uproar with Last Tango in Paris, won an Oscar for The Last Emperor, and took on a religious icon with Little Buddha, but for Bernardo Bertolucci, the light coming-of-age tale Stealing Beauty is the perfect homecoming. Shot last summer in and around a Tuscan villa where the actors also lived, the film, due in May, was an extended holiday for its cast. ''All our rooms were on the top floor,'' recalls Liv Tyler, playing an American teen who visits friends in Italy after her mom's suicide and befriends a leukemia-stricken writer (Jeremy Irons). ''We all had to share a bathroom. We'd be brushing our teeth in the hall and running around and singing. It was pretty nutty.'' The familial atmosphere suited the wide-eyed Tyler just fine. ''Getting up at five every day was, like, no problem,'' says the 18-year-old actress. ''I was up and out and excited to be there.'' Tyler has since returned to the U.S. to take a lead in Tom Hanks' rock & roll drama, That Thing You Do!, but still views her summer in Tuscany as the ideal Hollywood experience: ''It's never going to be that beautiful again!''
