A Boy and His Dog, a sci-fi black comedy and key '70s cult film, has a pre-Miami Vice Johnson and a Benji look-alike prowling across a postnuclear wasteland in search of food and sex; the movie's great joke is that the telepathic dog is the brains of the outfit. This wide-screen edition is the best-looking video version, and on a second audio track, director L.Q. Jones reveals that James Cagney, then retired, wanted to be the dog's voice but Jones said no thus depriving us the chance to hear Cagney deliver lines like ''definitely a putz!'' A
