Video Review

A Boy and His Dog (1995)

EW's GRADE
A

Details Movie Rated: R; Genres: Comedy, Sci-fi and Fantasy; With: Don Johnson, Jason Robards and Susanne Benton

A Boy and His Dog, a sci-fi black comedy and key '70s cult film, has a pre-Miami Vice Johnson and a Benji look-alike prowling across a postnuclear wasteland in search of food and sex; the movie's great joke is that the telepathic dog is the brains of the outfit. This wide-screen edition is the best-looking video version, and on a second audio track, director L.Q. Jones reveals that James Cagney, then retired, wanted to be the dog's voice but Jones said no — thus depriving us the chance to hear Cagney deliver lines like ''definitely a putz!'' A
