Modeling-industry watchdogs like Gross view this as a make-or-break moment for a younger generation of sleeker models: They can match the accomplishments of their Amazonian big sisters — if they want to. The business-minded Crawford always presented herself as a corporation; Valletta seems more interested in finding herself than in creating Amber Inc. ''I haven't found out what Amber needs to be doing in life,'' she says. ''I don't want to be a schmoozy star. I want to be somebody that's worth something to myself and not to a company or an image.''

The less angst-ridden Harlow just wants to let it rip. ''I've got a guitar. I can play a few chords. I've got a few clothes kicking around,'' she says. ''I can handle this MTV House of Style thing.''
