ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO With These Hands (Rykodisc) This Texas cult hero unites a welter of familial and musical strands: He's Sheila E.'s uncle; the brother of Santana percussionists Pete and Coke Escovedo; and a vet of punk (the Nuns), country punk (Rank and File), and post-punk hard rock (True Believers). His current sound, a multi-textured roots-pop, would be utterly beguiling if it weren't for his unresonant, plain-as-dough voice. His true calling: songwriting. B+
