Movie Review

Mallrats (1995)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Rated: R; Length: 94 Minutes; Genre: Comedy; With: Shannen Doherty, Claire Forlani, Jason Lee, Jeremy London and Kevin Smith; Distributor: Gramercy Pictures

After his Clerks wowed critics surprised to see a teen comedy resembling an art film, Kevin Smith took the money and ran to a major studio, bringing 90210's exiled Doherty with him. His follow-up, the contrived teen fable Mallrats, finds two likable losers going to the local mall to get over being dumped — only to find that one girlfriend's evil dad has cast her as the bachelorette in a live Dating Game. Smith wisely recycles from Clerks his and Jason Mewe's bizarre stoners, so Mallrats ends up a hopelessly stupid movie that should appeal to baked couch potatoes everywhere.
