The four-CD set Down Every Road traces Merle Haggard's career from 1962 to 1994, from his first single through his maturation into stylized honky-tonk and elegiac returns to his lonely youth. The 100-song set includes six previously unreleased songs two from the late '60s (''White Line Fever,'' ''I'm Looking for My Mind''), his creative high point. Not even his hero Lefty Frizzell produced a body of work this influential or satisfying.
