Down Every Road (1996)

EW's GRADE
A

Details Lead Performance: Merle Haggard; Genre: Country

The four-CD set Down Every Road traces Merle Haggard's career from 1962 to 1994, from his first single through his maturation into stylized honky-tonk and elegiac returns to his lonely youth. The 100-song set includes six previously unreleased songs — two from the late '60s (''White Line Fever,'' ''I'm Looking for My Mind''), his creative high point. Not even his hero Lefty Frizzell produced a body of work this influential or satisfying.
