Two middle-aged men, one a white mechanic (Robert Duvall), one a black cop (James Earl Jones), discover that they are literally brothers. Screenwriters Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson have made an earnest drama out of the ways the brothers slowly, grudgingly open up to each other. A Family Thing may be aimless, but its lack of cynicism also makes it a charming thing.
