Jo Dee Messina steps up to the plate with a grown woman's attitude toward life and love and a style that blends the vocal cadences of Reba McEntire with the lyrical worldliness of K.T. Oslin. Messina should write more — her one tune, ''On a Wing and a Prayer,'' is the album's best — but in choosing songs about commitment versus the lure of the road, she uncovers taut moments of truth. A most welcome debut. B+
