LEAVE IT TO Sharon Stone to turn populist in an election year. On Oscar night, Hollywood's couture queen kissed off designers in favor of a $22 Gap mock turtleneck (the company's rushing it back into stores next month). Worse, the glamour hangover hit New York as well, as megawatt stars shunned last week's fall collections. Uma Thurman popped up at Todd Oldham and Gwyneth Paltrow at Calvin Klein, but bankable front-row fans like last season's Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon were conspicuously absent. At Isaac Mizrahi, not even Sandra Bernhard was in her usual spot. ''Maybe because it rained they all sort of evaporated,'' shrugged the designer. Instead, tabloid wonders Lisa Marie Presley, Mike Tyson, and Woody Allen ate up the spotlight.
The lack of A-list stars put an untimely focus on the clothes. Despite a few standouts -- Richard Tyler's hammered leather jackets, Badgley Mischka's sequined suits -- the shows were short on trends. But the '70s are stayin' alive, and in a nod to Donny Osmond, purple was crowned the color for fall. ''It's the ugliest of the '70s,'' says E! Fashion File correspondent Lauren Ezersky, ''outfits I didn't buy even then.''
