Rated: R; Genres: Drama, Mystery, Thriller; With: Richard Gere and Edward Norton

A Catholic archbishop is murdered, and Richard Gere, as headline-grabbing defense attorney Martin Vail, jumps at the chance to defend the young man arrested for the crime. Aaron Stampler (Edward Norton) is a neurotically shy, stuttering kid who says he's innocent, and at first, Vail doesn't care whether he is or not. Then he finds out that the prosecuting attorney (Laura Linney) is his former lover; that the archbishop was involved in sexual hanky-panky; and that he's come to believe that Aaron really didn't do it. Vail finds himself making an emotional investment he hadn't counted on. Gere taps into his charismatic-weasel mode, but director Gregory Hoblit fills the big screen with excellent TV actors (Andre Braugher, John Mahoney, Maura Tierney) and then gives them nothing interesting to do. And oh, yeah: The crucial plot twist may leave you feeling burned.
