The In Sound From Way Out! (1996)

EW's GRADE
A-

Details Lead Performance: Beastie Boys; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Those dazzled by the Beastie Boys' crazily inventive, sometimes silly wordplay and too-cool-for-school image may find it easy to overlook the depth of their musical experimentation. But the all-instrumental EP The In Sound From Way Out! — 13 tracks of jazzed-out percussion, blaxploitation synth, and the occasional orientalized violin, each of which would serve credibly as any hero's theme song — should leave no doubt about where the grooviness really comes from.
