Video Review: 'The Bicycle Thief' (1996)

EW's GRADE
A

Details Movie Rated: Unrated; Genre: Drama; With: Lamberto Maggiorani; Distributor: Mayer-Burstyn

Vittorio De Sica's neorealist saga The Bicycle Thief, about an Italian laborer's quest to find the stolen bicycle he needs to support his family, remains one of the most heartrending films ever (if the ending doesn't make you cry, I don't want to know you). Previous video versions, however, came from inferior prints; this disc is struck from a gratifyingly crisp print with the usual indecipherable white subtitles replaced by easy-to-read yellow ones. A well-dubbed American version on the analog audio channel allows you to hear dialogue (in English) and see it translated (in English). Call it neorealism for the learning impaired. A
