Video Review: 'A Reason to Believe' (1996)

EW's GRADE
C

Details Movie Rated: R; Genre: Drama; With: Jay Underwood and Allison Smith

Watching A Reason to Believe, which not a lot of people did in theaters, is like trying to wake from a nightmare in which you are forced to witness the two most tiresome extremes on any college campus — the self-righteous lefty crusaders and the frat-boy troglodytes — make war. That's the bad dream in which a student (Smith) finds herself after she tips a few too many at a party. The ensuing drama could have been read straight from a maddeningly sensitive textbook on date rape; you feel like you should take notes. Even though you can download a rental coupon from the Web, wouldn't a quiz be more appropriate? C
