Roots (1996)

EW's GRADE
C-

Details Lead Performance: Sepultura; Genre: Metal

Roots began with an ambitious concept: Brazilian death-metal dudes hire a jazz percussionist and Amazon-warrior drummers from back home. Yet compared with the lusty mambo recipes of less-hyped South American rockeros like Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Sepultura's Latin loudness sounds inept. Their guitars emit a grandiose squall, but their mannered vocal harangues aren't powerful — just painful.
