The Essence Part 1 (1996)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: Ahmad Jamal; Genre: Jazz

Longtime fans of this mainstream pianist will find The Essence Part 1 contains the familiar bold dynamics, strong rhythmic thrust, and canny use of space (his perfectly placed pauses on ''Lover Man'' are as eloquent as his notes). What's surprising is how avant-garde Ahmad Jamal can sound (''Flight'' or the abstract title track). At 65, he continues to incorporate new influences. B+
