A couple of bogus plot contrivances notwithstanding, director David Fincher's Seven remains a superior scare show, from its fractured opening credits to its despairing Vertigo-like finale. This freeze-framable letterboxed edition features stunning remixed sound, generous bonuses (storyboards, deleted scenes), a video transfer that actually looks better than some theatrical release prints, plus illuminating audio interviews with the creative team. David Fincher comes across as surprisingly intellectual for a guy who used to shoot Aerosmith videos, but makeup whiz Rob Bottin, who giggles too much while discussing visits to morgues, reinforces every dark suspicion you've ever harbored about grown-up AV-squad geeks.
