The Juniper Tree

Details Movie Rated: Unrated; Genres: Drama, Foreign Language; With: Björk

Aside from an understated, nonmusical performance by Bjork (displaying none of the bluster she showcased to such great effect as the then lead singer of the Sugarcubes), this feature, made in Iceland, has little to recommend it. Based on a Brothers Grimm tale and shot in stark black and white, The Juniper Tree is redolent of an undigested Ingmar Bergman influence, confirming every dire preconception that one could possibly have of the Icelandic film industry. As a recently married teen who tries to prevent her witchy sister from wreaking vengeance on the new husband's son from a previous marriage, Bjork takes full advantage of her prepubescent appearance.
