Slang (1996)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: Def Leppard; Genre: Metal

Slang, Def Leppard's most stripped-down music since 1983's Pyromania, still has enough hooks and high harmonies to keep '80s fans happy. The rapped title track is a new-jack glam-rock invention over a Bo Diddley beat, and ''Gift of Flesh'' boasts garage oomph Oasis would envy. Elsewhere, Lep alternate sparkling ballads with industrial funk that won't sound outmoded on MTV. They come off as market-savvy pros, but creative pros. B+
