Talk about publicity nightmares: As this strange parable about a stark white, hairless teen with an amazing intellect and extraordinary physical powers was debuting theatrically, news of writer-director Victor Salva's conviction seven years earlier on child-molestation charges cropped up. Knowing that, unfortunately, makes Powder's artistic worth academic. Which is too bad. On video, away from the controversy, Powder is eerily moving, with fine performances. Still, when colored by Salva's background, the talk of loneliness and being misunderstood comes across as really creepy. There's just no way to separate the dancer from the dance. C
