Frankie is a stargazing kid growing up poor and friendless in postwar Ireland. He's also a dwarf, which makes his uphill struggle even more daunting. As portrayed by Alan Pentony, Frankie is a poignantly resilient hero, muddling through each setback with his hopefulness remaining intact. Yet Frankie Starlight is such a dreary slog, so dependent on contrived conflict, that its happy ending feels forced and a little false. And beware the video box's quote comparing the movie to Daniel Day-Lewis' Oscar-winning My Left Foot. These two Irish imports may share the same producer, but they're hardly made of the same stuff.
