Details Lead Performance: Various Artists; Genre: Soundtracks

Be it Top Gun or Cocktail, what's a Tom Cruise movie without all-American guitar rock? Something like Music From and Inspired By 'Mission: Impossible', probably. In a sign that America has embraced British pop, the soundtrack concentrates on new U.K. acts in genres like dub reggae (Massive Attack's subpar ''Spying Glass''), synth pop (Pulp's booming ''I Spy''), and '60s cocktail kitten (Nicolette's ''No Government''). Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to edit out the quirky orchestral passages by Danny Elfman, which should have been relegated to an all-score album. B-
