Book Review

Independence Day (1995)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Writer: Richard Ford; Genre: Fiction; Publisher: Knopf

One badly wants to like both Independence Day — a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel — and its narrator, Frank Bascombe, whose marriage collapsed and oldest son died in Ford's The Sportswriter. Now a real-estate agent in Haddam, N.J., Bascombe provides a minutely detailed account of a moderately disastrous July 4 weekend. A vivid, witty, but unpleasurable depiction of a man hovering on the edge of clinical depression. B
