Just as Oscar can mean big bucks in video sales and movie tickets, Tony can give a Broadway show legs. So from now until June 2, nominees will be anxiously wondering what the Tony voters are thinking. Shall we second-guess?
Best Musical Nominees: Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk;
Chronicle of a Death Foretold; Rent; Swinging on a Star
Winner:
A Pulitzer Prize, rapturous reviews, and the death of
lyricist-composer Jonathan Larson make Rent the sentimental
favorite.
Best Play Nominees: Buried Child; Master Class; Racing Demon;
Seven Guitars
Winner: Master Class has the Drama Desk and Outer
Critics Circle awards to prove it has the edge.
Best Revival of a Play Nominees: A Delicate Balance; A
Midsummer Night's Dream; An Ideal Husband; Inherit the Wind
Winner: Balance, the drama by rediscovered critical darling
Edward Albee, is 30 years old but shows no signs of aging or
losing.
Best Revival of a Musical Nominees: A Funny Thing Happened on
the Way to the Forum; Company; Hello, Dolly!; The King and I
Winner: Although King (1951) and Forum (1962) both benefit from
slick stagings, Rodgers and Hammerstein's King is more regal
than Sondheim's burlesque.
Leading Actor in a Play Nominees: Philip Bosco; George
Grizzard; George C. Scott; Martin Shaw
Winner: Bosco gets credit
with Carol Burnett for Moon Over Buffalo's healthy run.
Leading Actor in a Musical Nominees: Savion Glover; Nathan
Lane; Adam Pascal; Lou Diamond Phillips
Winner: Overlooked for
Love! Valour! Compassion!, Lane will be honored as the funniest
thing happening in Forum.
Leading Actress in a Play Nominees: Carol Burnett; Zoe
Caldwell; Rosemary Harris; Elaine Stritch
Winner: A close call:
As a drunk broad in A Delicate Balance, Stritch demands your
attention, but as Maria Callas, the demanding diva in Master
Class, Zoe Caldwell can't be ignored.
Leading Actress in a Musical Nominees: Julie Andrews; Crista
Moore; Donna Murphy; Daphne Rubin-Vega
Winner: Andrews will take
the award, whether she wants it or not Tony voters will snub
her snub.
