V.M. Bhatt, a remarkable, culture-weaving Indian slide guitarist, played an acclaimed duet with Ry Cooder on the album A Meeting by the River. Bhatt's meeting with Taj Mahal — and N. Ravikiran — if less thrilling, is still enticing, with faintly exotic treatments of Mahal staples like ''Stand by Me.'' A little more Eastern spice in the East-meets-West soup would have been nice on Mumtaz Mahal. B-
