Brainchild (1996)

Details Lead Performance: Society of Soul; Genres: Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B

Despite one too many didactic spoken-word interludes, Society of Soul's debut Brainchild has an invitingly smooth and funky R&B vibe, thanks to production by Organized Noize (who account for three of the Atlanta crew's five members). The nearest reference point is Curtis Mayfield, though this is a communal effort with updated beats, soothing choruses, and hope-filled lyrics: redemption songs for the matured hip-hop set. B
