Actor-comedian Robert Wuhl, who as a writer did much to help make Billy Crystal's Oscar-hosting stints memorably funny, makes a forgettable debut as director. Wuhl stars as an executive for a public television network that, via a technical glitch in the ratings system, starts getting top ratings. In response, the commercial networks abandon their trash programming and start scheduling high-culture stuff. It's a nifty idea, but Wuhl, who also wrote Season, approaches it like a TV variety-show sketch, with cameos by stars like Tom Selleck as TV hero Rock Maninoff, a crime-busting cellist, and Joe Piscopo doing a ready-for-prime-time Hamlet. Very quickly, the jokes about the stupid and gullible viewing public become both repetitive and unwarranted. I mean, even TV junk like Coach is funnier than this feature film. D
