Tie-Died: Rock 'N Roll's Most Deadicated Fans

Details Movie Rated: R; Genre: Documentary

For squares who've never dreamed of running away to join the circus, the prospect of spending an hour and a half with dropouts who (up until recently at least) devoted their lives to following Grateful Dead tours seems a dubious one. But director Andrew Behar's Dead-mania documentary (in which the band itself never appears) presents a surprisingly varied array of humanity — beatific, pragmatic, angry, and, inevitably, stoned individuals who tell engaging and sometimes surprising stories about their obsession. The long, strange trips described in Tie-Died: Rock 'N Roll's Most Deadicated Fans address more than just the music — they provide a mini-chronicle of a counterculture that never really died. B+
