On Fridays round midnight at Roswell Lanes, outside Atlanta, it's a two-hour wait for a lane. And in Deerfield, Ill., the Deerbrook Lanes has a cover charge. Is bowling out of the gutter? It is when it's ''cosmic bowling,'' a late-night craze throughout the Brunswick chain that's making the old blue-collar sport a blue-chip game for a new generation.
The change comes from chemically treated alleys that glow purple in ultraviolet light.''When we flick the lights off, it's like pushing the fun button,'' says Larry Weber of the Twin Cities' Eden Prairie Lanes. With 81 of its 117 centers lit up, Brunswick, claiming a patent, has been selling the equipment to other alleys, making it easier for playful players to bask in the glow.
