Steven Spielberg's megaflop about a war panic that swept '40s L.A. apparently remains dear to his heart — as revealed by this years-in-the-making deluxe version of the director's cut. This comedy's style can best be described as proto-Beavis and Butt-head (things blowing up are supposed to be funny by definition). Still, if you like 1941, you certainly get your money's worth in this four-disc package: a beautiful letterboxed print, plus three sides of interviews, outtakes, and trailers. Most enlightening bit: the story of how John Wayne turned down a role (which eventually went to Robert Stack) because he deemed the project offensively un-American. B+
