Burning Question

Making the ''Impossible'' Possible

Spelling out the lyrics of the theme song is causing some problems for movie critics

Q: Spelling out Mission: Impossible's famous theme music has reduced more than one critic to Beavis and Butt-head-worthy phonetics. It has appeared as ''Dum-dum dum-dum, dum-dum dum-dum'' (London Times), ''Duh, DUH, duh-duh, duh, DUH'' (New Jersey's The Record), and ''DAH-di-dooooo — Dah-di-dooooo'' (New York magazine). Just how do you spell it?

A: Lalo Schifrin, who composed the instrumental for the original '60s TV show, gives the definitive spelling as ''Tooomm! Toom toom toom/Tooomm! Toom toom toom.''
