He has been roped into the acid-jazz corral, but Charlie Hunter who juggles bass lines and guitar parts on his eight-string guitar really descends from the old school of funk-jazz cool. On Charlie Hunter Quintet, his finest album yet, Hunter adds another horn to the band and dispenses lovable looseness, with the BBQ-saucy grooves and brainy turns that make him one of the brighter upstarts around.
