You know the drill. You've got your popcorn; the lights go down, then up comes that cheery music and a few announcements: ''Welcome to the theater! No talking! No smoking! No littering! No red meat! No freedom of religion!'' Hey, wait a minute. This is no message from the management; it's the trailer for John Carpenter's Escape From L.A. (due Aug. 9). When last seen in 1981's Escape From New York, Kurt Russell's grizzled, growling one-eyed Snake Plissken was rescuing the president from the hellish prison zone of Manhattan. From the looks of the post-quake island of Los Angeles, Carpenter's future-shock vision hasn't changed. Nor has Russell's Snake. But that's the good news. Back in the sunny Reagan '80s, this grubby good-bad guy was ahead of his time. Now his hard-ass heroics fit right in.
