Around Townes

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Jonell Mosser; Genre: Country

Often referred to as Nashville's Janis Joplin, Jonell Mosser sounds more like an early Tracy Nelson — bluesy, strong, and full of emotion. Surprisingly, she's chosen all Townes Van Zandt songs for her long-awaited debut Around Townes, beefing up his country-folk arrangements with blues mandolin and jazzy bass. Stirring, but not always successful (despite guests Delbert McClinton and John Cowan). B
