The Hughes Brothers' follow-up to Menace II Society is an exceptionally assured piece of work, a saga of black GIs in Vietnam (and at home in its aftermath) that plays like The Deerhunter N the Hood. This wide-screen edition, superbly transferred, features trailers, deleted scenes, an interview with the real GI who inspired the story, and audio commentary by the creative team. Most of Dead Presidents is engrossing, but what is one to make of cinematographer Lisa Rinzler rhapsodizing about a scene's ''warm, dusty feel'' at the moment the camera shows a soldier blowing a VC's brains out? Oops. A
